“Warung” is a small shop, if I can say; this is
Traditional shop, it is about 2X2 meters that provide
daily need of local community such as; raw
vegetable, rice, raw fish and meat, sugar, egg etc.
This “Warung” used to open early morning at about 5.00am to
supply the housewife needed, before preparing meals for their family member or
before they going for work.
Some “Warungs” only provide coffee (Traditional Coffee),
snack and some beverages and some also specialized in providing meals.
This “Warung” will be open bit later at about 10.00am.
“Warung” is also a place for Balinese to hang out in the
afternoon, chit chat with others among the community while having coffee or
other beverages.
Balinese who live in a village usually always have time
to chit chat among the community.
In one village there used to be more than 2 “Warungs”
available…….
sometime even every 200 meters there is one “Warung”
available.
This is probably because of the easiest way to manage the
flow of their fund and money beside there is always demand from their community
for affordable daily stuff.
This is also the easiest way to run the business
considering the Balinese who live in a small village who own “Warung”, does not
have
any basic economy knowledge or other advance trade skill.
Before the modern life style take over most of the
Balinese, the transaction in “Warung” is by Barter system
If they run bit modern shop, they need a specific economy
skill since they have to hire an employee and obey all the regulation from
manpower minister, calculate and pay Government Tax, make necessary accounting
journal etc.
Seem they are all little bit too much and complicated.
While “Warung” they just need a space ….
They used to use their front of the House (Front Yard) and
the owner will in charge in “Warung” so they do not need any employee to look
after the “Warung”.
The unique side of “Warung” is: people can take in
advance whatever they need in “Warung” and the settlement could be done once
they have got paid if they are an employee or on harvest season.
UBUD where this village is well known around the globe
and most of the local people is in mid-scale of economic condition, they prefer
to buy their daily need or monthly need at Supermarket or go to café if they
need to mingle with others especially the young generation.
“Warung” is not that interesting except they need a thing
urgently and they don’t have time to get out from their house.
The easiest way is pop up to “Warung” where usually the
place is among the community residence.
“Warung” in Ubud is almost disappear and not exist since
most of the local people prefer to establish modern shop,
mini resto as well as café to cater the Tourist both
domestic and overseas.
Beside it is more modern, the image also cleaner than
“Warung”.
In modern shop, there is also special place (corner) to
hang out and use the gadget since most of the café and modern shop provide Free
Wi-Fi for their customer and this is very interesting for tourist as well as
young local people.
The revenue also even better since the price of the stuff
will be more expensive compare to “Warung”.
There is ONE “Warung” that still exist in the area; at
the front of Best Western Agung Premier Ubud.
The owner is happy to assist any single people who
purchase a thing in her “Warung”.
All prices are very affordable due to they are all TAX
FREE.
This “Warung” is established at about 4 years.
And it’s still survive since there is still demand from
the surrounding community.
As long as they can manage cash flow of the “Warung” and
there is a little bit profit, the owner assume that they still have to look
after it.
